Grand final of Bedfordshire's messiest pasta eating competition.

Saucy shovelers gathered in Ampthill to compete in Bedfordshire's premier pasta eating contest.

The messy munchers met at Donatello's Italian restaurant in Dunstable Street for the grand final on Monday.

Four teams, two from the restaurant's Dunstable branch and two from Ampthill, took part in five frenzied rounds, including eating blindfolded and with hands behind backs. They also scoffed spaghetti laced with chilli.

Speed was the name of the game, and the eat-off was eventually won by pasta masters The Vic Pub Babettes, from Dunstable, who chomped their way to victory over the Devourers, the A Team and the Pasta Failures.

Proceeds are going to Chums Child Bereavement Service, which helps youngsters and their families in Bedfordshire following the death of a loved one.

Can marathon runner Paula Radcliffe and badminton star Gail Emms win Olympic gold for Bedford?
Paula's injury and the quality of Gail's opponents might make it tough.
I'm backing Paula to fulfil her dream at last.
Gail must do it after her fabulous first round win with Nathan Robertson.
Come on girls! You both can do it!
